we're back up to 4.1k peak frequency so not sure what the worry is about. |

Sorry IWS, I studied Economy for 3 years and these trend (the six months and three months) are absolutely negative. In other words, if it was a market quotation you should sell immediately.
well in that case

90% loss, Planetside 2 is a total garbage heap then.
In other words; you need to do some more homework, not discounting your economics skills but you need to get trendy with MMOs more and study the patterns better and throw some psychology and sociology into the mix. |

We've been pretty steady on 3.5k-3.8k weekdays since 1.4 and then a little more than 4k weekends. Numbers were around 4.5k-4.7k weekdays and a little more than 5k weekends prior to 1.4.
Yeah I am aware of weekly trends just I am expecting another week of instability before we start seeing where the numbers are really going. |

Sorry IWS, I studied Economy for 3 years and these trend (the six months and three months) are absolutely negative. In other words, if it was a market quotation you should sell immediately. The number of peeps who've gone bankrupt looking at 3 & 6 months trends is legion. Doesn't mean you're wrong doesn't mean your right. And your invoking of special economics knowledge owing to you education reminds me of a priest. The only priests i'm willing to take at face value wear pirate costumes. The medieval priest in this case, and with all the respect I may have for any other person and for many priests, is you. Negating the obvious. You're right, 3 and 6 months are not enough to judge "successful" from "failure" that's why I'm asking the community for possible provisions because the simple statistics are negative. Just try to be realistic: just don't hide behind GTA V, don't hide behind Summer Time, don't hide behind (in the future) PS4, Metal Gear Solid 5, Christmas or whatever. Trend calculation is one of the basic statistics, and you don't need any kind of "special" knowledge to understand what's going on here anyway. Please then, don't even bother to post any answer in this thread, if you can't even recognize that there's actually a problem, or better, many problems to be solved. The purpose of this thread is to start a constructive discussion, but if you and some others are going to post "everything's ok", "there's no problem", "you visionary" please desist.
I do not get the luxury of looking at graphs from tomorrow nor is it something I really have to worry about more than one week at a time.
I typically don't hide behind them, just when our population spikes down its clear cut it did for whatever factors on that day its very hard to deny the impact in Dust 514.
For example the 1.4 down spike started three days before patch deployment which means external factors where to mostly blame not internal ones. Idiot graph readers didn't match dates and blamed 1.4s 'population loss' on the patch instead of things that launched 3 days before on the PS3, namely FF:ARR going open beta and Diablo 3. Funny thing about our patches is that
Now unlike Planetside 2 which whose graph shows a near constant 10% 'LOSS' every month in steam players that even their latest patch has entirely failed to bring back interest (in other words according to the player charts players are simply no longer involved in the game enough to know when a patch is coming to try it out.) Now one good point of Planetside 2 is nearly unphased by external developments, many other shooters hit the market and nobody leaves that game in droves, this can be seen as both a good and bad thing. Good because customers don't abandon the game at a whim to the greener fields of another, bad when you compound it that at end of the month you're still suffering a loss which means the game is nearly at full fault for player losses.
Dust 514 is a bit different in terms of its patches. The patch typically causes a down spike of all things. The numbers do go back up for a short time after the patch because of a multiplier event that follows a patch but net gain loss in the end after everyone patches in. Now unlike Planetside 2 where the earlier patches used to cause increases of players coming back in. Dust 514's numbers go slowly back up over the course of a patch. This can be a number of things but I am willing to bank on most of those folks being veterans giving the patch another go after their initial rage quit. The other being low number gains.
Now what has changed recently on the steam graph was the beta period was removed from the all time graph which had at one point 120,000 steam players playing planetside 2, and with this month only 2k players actively logging in....
Dust on the other hand never enjoyed numbers that high percentage wise even during its beta phase. The peak you see on the map now is the all time peak at 6.5k
Now people had recalled that Dust 514 used to have 9k players, this is wrong. that was 'singularity' the test server combined population which included eve pilots. As far as time on singularity and earlier test server populations all that is still classified and non-permissible release.
Dust current peak to peak is also surpassing earlier months started back as far as June though very marginal. In other words, we're pretty freaking stable for an MMO.
General typical pattern of Most MMOs (and nearly all video games and almost arguable new tech products such as the iphone) is always a decline, most developers focus on combating the decline and fail horribly. Which is why the massive giant MMO world of warcraft had peaked at 15 million shortly after its launch and declined to half of its former glory around 7 million, they are now developing technologies to make it seem the game is populated which is a generally bad sign but also its coming at the cost and ire of many players.

Now a real challenge for me would be interpreting the new player graphs.
If I was armed with the knowledge of which ones are alts and unique, ex-trails, or mere percentage wise of each group it becomes really difficult how that translates into the above active player graph eventually.
Luckily CCP has these numbers and use them to good effect. |
